Minee Subee’s Private Kindergarten gives students a well-rounded education. They are introduced to and learn about literacy, math, computers, art, cooking, health and fitness, music, science, and social studies.

Minee Subee’s Private Kindergarten class uses a whole language approach to literacy. This program, called Kindergarten Place, is by Scholastic’s Literacy Place. Kindergarten Place provides the students with the opportunity to explore literature, develop oral language, develop writing skills, learn phonics, and learn about the community and the world in which we live. It also connects the school with the family.

The students explore literature, share ideas, and develop literacy skills. Students read and explore many different types of literature: traditional folk tales, tales from around the world, classic children’s books, information books, counting books, ABC books, culturally diverse literature, poems, songs, and rhymes. Through reading, students gain a sense of story, explore rhyming patterns, and recognize repetitive structure.

Daily oral language helps students become better communicators. They are encouraged to talk about the literature they share in the classroom and discuss questions about their feelings and ideas of the literature read. They learn about social literacy skills, such as learning to take turns speaking and responding to each other’s ideas.

Kindergarten Place offers many different experiences for students to engage in the writing process. This is the most ideal way for students to learn sound/letter relationships and concepts. Students learn through shared writing, journal writing, story and book writing, and language experience charts.

The math program used is Houghton Mifflin Mathematics, which gives the students a vast knowledge of concepts that they will need as they progress through school. Mathematics provides essential problem-solving tools that students will need in everyday situations. It teaches them about location, classification, counting, time and money, geometrical shapes, measurements, and addition and subtraction. The book comes with punch-outs to provide the students with hands-on experiences. There are flash cards for teaching numbers and shapes, money that is authentic in size and color, and a clock.

Technology is very exciting for kindergarten students. Computers are an integral part of our class. Minee Subee’s kindergarten class is equipped with two computers for their use only. Our programs, which are continually being updated, provide many different activities for learning. Some of the computer programs we use are: Casper, which teaches sorting, hand/eye coordination, and problem solving; Best Math; Castle, which teaches logical reasoning; and three Magic School Bus programs, which teach the students about oceans, the Solar System, and dinosaurs.

Science, which is the journey to learn the objective truth, is part of the daily curriculum. The class learns about different topics such as: dinosaurs, outer space, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, Native Americans, weather, famous Americans, plants, insects, the human body, nutrition, the five senses, celebrations of diversity, art from around the world, oceans, life cycles, rain forests, and save the earth.

Art is a way for the students to show their creative side. There are a variety of materials available for their use. Their creations are displayed to give the students a sense of accomplishment.

Cooking experiences are provided, which is something in which the students love to participate. Cooking teaches the students math through measurement. They learn about steps in a process, taking turns, and cause and effect.

Music is taught through songs, records, finger plays, and poems. The students use many different instruments. Children’s dances are taught in a group setting.
